Drum set not working out of the box!

Postby ertomas » Fri Feb 19, 2010 3:12 pm

Hi guys. I have posted this on the activision support site:
Hi. I've bought GHWT complete band set from Amazon.com.

The drum set is not working when connected to the Wii. I can use the joystick and buttons on the drums but the pads and pedal are completely unresponsive.

Is there a way that you can help me diagnose and maybe even fix the drum set remotely? (this is because i live in Venezuela and there are no support centers here)

From what I can see, and after seeing pictures of the drum internals on the Internet, it seems that either theres a loose connector from one of the controller board to another or maybe one of the boards is just dead.

A friend with a console repair shop told me that some kits came with a sentitivity problem that made them almost unsensitive. I think i have hit the green pad hard enough but maybe I should try hitting it harder and if it works try adjusting the sensitivity...

Any ideas on this?

Hi ertomas

If you can use the buttons on the controller unit (the one at the top where the wiimote sits) but NOTHING else on the drums is working then I would say the problem will be with the connections between the 3 parts you can see in this image:

This image shows the parts for a Xbox drumkit but they all operate the same.

You will need to check the connections between the controller box and the drum brain which is via the black plug seen joined together in this picture:

Check the black plug that joins them by turning your drums over and removing the 3 screws that hold the drum controller box on (3 top center screws either small Phillips or Torx 10 screws), if this does not work for you you may want to open the drums up and check the same ribbon cable is attached correctly to the circuit board and also check it inside the controller box.

If this does not sort your issue out just post your results here and we will come up with something else for you to try!

Thanks for posting in the forums

Hi Steve,

I forgot to mention that I opened the drums yesterday but didn't want to mention it on the activision support site :)

The ribbons are all connected, however I didn't have a multimeter at hand to test them.

I'm starting to think that maybe the drum brain or pad controller is dead?

So... after further testing I have come to the conclusion that either the drum brain or drum synth is dead...

I'll try to find one so I can test it.

Do you sell these?
