Cymbal still have problem after repair

Postby Slywalker » Thu Jan 21, 2010 4:50 pm

Hi steve,

Thanks for the drum repair kit I order here, nice and sweet delivery :)

I changed the sensor on my cymbal but I still have the same problem. Please help me

I have the guitar hero drum kit for Wii. The yellow cymbal register one out of five hits generally. I used the red octane tuner device to increase sensitivy of the cymbal to the maximum I notice a slight improvement but it's still doesn't register most of the strokes.

Before ordering the kit I swapped cymbals and I observes the same effect with the yellow cymbal on both the left of right connector while the other orange cymbal works perfectly fine in both places.

I ordered and solder the new sensor at work. I'm working in an embedded system lab so I think I didn't mix up things up. And I have exactly the same issue when I tested it back home yesterday. The electronic board is so simple inside the cymbal that I don't see how this doesn't work.

I would like to know if you have a data sheet of the sensor so I can test it at work without having to bring my drum kit and plug my wii at the office. I think maybe the female jack connector is a bit damage I'll try to test the connector resistivity this WE.

If you have any idea about what can have gone wrong here... I'm a bit lost since it's working partially.

Hi Skywalker

Welcome to the forums, and thanks for giving such a detailed description of your problem - it really does help us help you!

From what you have said I would say the issue is still with the sensitivity of your cymbals. You said you had tuned the sensitivity to maximum with the drum tuning kit - did you know if you disconnect the tuning kit, close the application on your pc then start it again it starts all the values back in the middle meaning you can keep turning the sensitivity up higher and higher each time you do it? I would say this should be the first thing to try.

I would not image you have installed the sensor incorrectly as you certainly sound like you know your stuff, we don't have the datasheets for them I am afraid but if you suspect a faulty sensor we will happlily ship a replacement although I doubt it would solve your problem.

The other things you can try to get the sensitivity even higher (which your drum kit may need) if to remove the sensor again and take off the sticky pad used to attch it and replace that with double sided sticky tape, this will allow more of the vibration to be transfered to the sensor thus increasing it's sensitivity.

If the female jack is at fault you can usually test this by going onto the music studio and creating a new song within your Guitar Hero Game (always the best place for testing) then try hitting the cymbal while moving the wire underneath it, if it is a bad contact on the female jack you should see when you hold it in one place it works and when you hold it somewhere else it does not. You can put a new female jack on the other side of the circuit baord quite easly if you need to, you will just need to just a hole in the underside cover of the cymbal afterwards to allow you to plug into the new jack.

Get back and tell us how you get on though.
